Understanding the Lack of Diversity in Tech

This module introduces the Leaky Tech Pipeline Framework to explain why it's difficult for many people of color and women to enter and succeed in the tech industry. This framework explains a complex set of structural and social/psychological barriers, or “leaks” that occur in pre-K-12 grade, higher education, the workplace, and entrepreneurship. The Leaky Tech Pipeline is grounded in social science research, data, and the experiences and insights of tech professionals.

Words Matter: Being Intentional About Language

Words matter, and the workforce looks to DEIB professionals as a model for inclusive language. But the evolution of language, coupled with knowledge gaps we have as humans, can lead to anyone falling short on appropriate word selection. This module draws on linguistic anthropology to demonstrate that inclusive language is more than just dictionary meanings. Applying the principles of inclusive language will allow you to bypass common pitfalls and create communication that makes people feel seen, heard, and valued rather than disrespected, marginalized, or erased.

Identifying Previous Efforts to Address Diversity in Tech

The underrepresentation of women and some people of color in tech came to the forefront in 2014, but efforts to diversify the workforce date back to the 1960s. This module highlights efforts to include people of color and women in the workforce through initiatives from the federal government, civil rights organizations, and individuals working in and outside of the tech industry.

Understanding Tech Culture

The tech workplace is dominated by white cisgendered men, and hirers often favor candidates with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from specific schools. This module helps learners understand tech culture, the pitfalls of current practices and structures, identifies areas where changes have been made and data-backed research that supports where changes can occur to create more equity for underrepresented workers.
